SC upholds life imprisonment for 2 in child Rakib murder case
DHAKA, Feb 22, 2021(BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC)
today upheld a High Court order that had commuted death sentences of two
convicts to life imprisonment in a case lodged over sensational murder of
child Rakib in Khulna in 2015.
A three-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain
passed the order, dismissing appeals filed by the two convicts Md Omar Sharif
and Mintu, Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath told newsmen.
Attorney General AM Amin Uddin in his reaction termed today’s judgement as
a message for the people behind such crimes.
“People who are involved with crimes like child oppression and killing are
brutes. Punishment is must for them. On one hand, the court actually has
given the punishment for the crime, they have also given a message to the
society,” the chief state counsel said.
According to case records, Omar Sharif and Mintu killed Rakib, 12, by
pumping air into his body through rectum on August 3, 2015. Sharif was angry
with Rakib as he had quitted job in his (Sharif) garage.
Khulna Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court on November 8, 2015, sentenced
Sharif and Mintu to death in the case lodged by Rakib’s father.
The High Court, however on April 4 in 2017, commuted death sentences of the
two convicts to life imprisonment after holding hearings on the death
reference and jail appeals.
The court had also fined the two convicts Taka 50 thousand each.
