JU asks students to vacate dorms: students continue demo

SAVAR, Feb 22, 2021 (BSS)- Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) today continued demonstration for 3rd consecutive day to press home their demands for bringing the attackers on JU students to justice .

Earlier, on Sunday night, a press release issued JU registrar office asked all students to vacate halls by Monday morning who were illegally staying .

Hall provosts along with other teachers and proctorial body visited the
dormitories this morning and requested students to leave hall as government is yet to announce reopening of halls .

Defying the order, agitating students gathered at the transport area of the university and vowed to continue demonstration to realize their pre- declared demands including reopening dormitories, providing treatment to the injured students and ensure proper justice over attack on students by the villagers.

Later, they brought out a procession from transport yard toward female dormitories and ransacked the entrance of Bangamata Sheikh Fajilatunnessa Mujib Hall.

Professor Motaher Hossain, president of the provost committee said “We have requested students to follow the directives by university authorities last night.

Earlier, on Friday night, at least 47 JU students were injured in an attack by the locals of Geruavillage adjacent to the university following a dispute over a cricket match.

After Maghrib prayers, villagers armed with rods, sticks and other local weapons gathered in GeruaBazar. They were called in through loudspeakers of a local mosque.

Villagers attacked JU students and set fire to four motorcycles in Gerua Bazar. A group of students gathered there and launched a counter-attack at around 6:30pm.

Following the incident, protest sparked at JU campus demanding reopening dormitories, to provide treatment of injured students and to ensure proper justice over attack on students by villagers.
