Athlete Shammi gets flat, cheque worth Tk. 25 lakhs
DHAKA, Feb 18, 2021 (BSS)- State Minister for Youth and Sports Mohammad
Zahid Ahsan Russell, MP, today handed over the key of the flat and a cheque
of Taka 25 lakhs given by the Prime Minister to former gold medalist
Taekwondo athlete Shammi Akter at the secretariat, said a Ministry of Youth
and Sports press release today.
Youth and Sports Secretary Mohammad Akhter Hossain was also present at the
time.
After receiving the key of flat and cheque, Shammi become overwhelmed with
emotion and said she is very grateful to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for
giving her the money and flat which are the best achievement in her life.
Shammi also thanked the State Minister for Youth and Sports for his
overall cooperation in this regards.
Expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister, the State Minister said
sports-friendly Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina always stands by our players
with their happiness and sorrow. She is the real guardian of the sports
arena. During the COVID-19 pandemic we stood beside our players to help them
to the best of our ability. Hopefully, this support will continue in the
future.
Shammi Akter won gold medal in Taekwondo at the 10th South Asian Games.
After the death of her husband, she was living a helpless life with her
children.
When the matter came up in various media, it came to the notice of the
State Minister and he called Shammi Akter to his office and inquired into the
details.
The State Minister also informed the Prime Minister about Shammi’s plight.
