Friends and Heroes campaign launched to alleviate poverty

DHAKA, Feb 15, 2021 (BSS) – Friends and Heroes campaign was launched here
today virtually aiming to support marginalized people in remote areas in the
country for lifting them out of poverty.

World famous cricketer Shakib Al Hasan joined the inaugural function of the
campaign launched by Friendship, a non-government organization.

As COVID-19, Cyclone Amphan and the subsequent flooding exacerbate the
existing challenges of climate change, poverty and isolation in the most
remote areas of Bangladesh, Friendship has stepped up its work to empower
these marginalized communities.

As part of launching of the Friends and Heroes campaign, a press conference
was arranged virtually.

Bangladesh ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, Founder and Executive Director
of Friendship Runa Khan, `Friends and Hero’ Brand and Creative Advisor,
Shuvankar Roy, journalists and representatives of local communities addressed
the press conference.

Sakib urged all to extend their helping hands for removing economic
hardship of the people who are living in char areas.

“I visited different remote areas of the country… people in these areas
need different basic facilities including healthcare and education to improve
their living standard,” he added.

Runa Khan said over the last 19 years, Friendship has been serving
marginalized people of chars and climate change impacted areas. Due to the
intervention of Friendship, many locals of these areas have not only become
self-reliant but also been playing valiant role to help their neighbours, she
added.

Friendship sources said the campaign features everyday heroes from within
and around Friendship. These heroes are the local medical teams dedicating
their lives to work year after year on ship hospitals away from their home
and family; the foreign doctors and nurses on those same floating hospitals
travelling up and down remote rivers whilst performing life-changing
surgeries, they added.
