Data highlights of Chinese economy during Spring Festival holiday

BEIJING, Feb 14,2021 (BSS/XINHUA) – China’s economy continued to gather steam during the Spring Festival holiday although millions of people have stayed put for the weeklong holiday, which usually sees mass migration across the country.

The following are some data highlights revealing China’s economic vitality during the holiday starting on Thursday:

— On Thursday, the day before the Spring Festival, online payments through the China UnionPay network, the country’s largest bank card payment processor, reached 357.2 billion yuan (about 55.5 billion U.S. dollars), up 7.1 percent over the same lunar day of the previous year.

— On Thursday and Friday, Chinese express delivery firms handled some 130 million parcels, up 223 percent year on year, data from the State Post Bureau showed.

To make up for the loss of family gatherings, holiday parties and get-togethers, many have chosen to send “gift parcels” or make purchases online for their families and friends far away, pushing up logistics demand.

— China’s box office earnings on Friday topped 1.7 billion yuan. The figure surpassed the 1.4 billion yuan generated on Spring Festival two years ago, creating a new Chinese daily box office milestone.

— On Saturday, a total of 10.8 million passenger trips were made, showed data from the State Council joint prevention and control mechanism against COVID-19.

The number of railway passenger trips stood at 2.26 million and air passenger trips reached 325,000.
