500-bigha land brought under Sunflower cultivation in Joypurhat

JOYPURHAT, Feb 13, 2021 (BSS) – A total of 500 bighas of land have been
brought under Sunflower cultivation in five upazilas of the district during
the current season.

There is a huge potential for cultivation of oilseeds like Sunflower in the
district, which has a surplus of agricultural production in the region,
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said cultivation of
Sunflower is increasing every year in the district as the growers are getting
fair price of their products.

Of the total, 150 bighas of land are in Sadar upazila, 100 bighas in
Akkelpur upazila, 150 bighas in Panchbibi upazila, 50 bighas in Khetlal and
50 bighas in Kalai upazila.

A total of 500 small and marginal farmers of the district got incentive
from the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).

Sources said there is a huge potential for Sunflower cultivation in
Joypurhat district considering the soil quality and suitable weather in the
country. Sunflower cultivation is easier, cheaper and more profitable and it
requires very little irrigation and small amount of fertilizers.

Sunflower oil is very beneficial for heart patients, said S M Meftahul
Bari, deputy director of the district agricultural extension department of
the district.

The crop-specialists and field-workers of DAE continued rendering their
field-level service to let cultivators know about the modern cultivation
methods to cultivate Sunflower crops through using latest technologies.
