2005 bomb blasts: 17 get different jail terms in Satkhira

SATKHIRA, Feb 10, 2021 (BSS) – A Satkhira court today convicted 17 people
and sentenced them to different jail terms in a case over the series bomb
blast by Jamaa’t-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) at five places of the
district on August 17, 2005.

“Among the convicted people, eight were sentenced to 13 years imprisonment
while nine others to different terms. It also acquitted one of the accused
and another had died,” said Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Abdul Latif.

Three of the convicts — Fakhruddin Raji, Abul Khayer and Naimuddin — are
absconding, the public prosecutor added.

Satkhira Additional District and Sessions Judge First Court Judge Shariful
Islam pronounced the verdict in a crowded court today in presence of 14
accused.

The convicts are Moniruzzaman, Nur Ali, Gias Uddin, Ismail Habibur,
Bildhal Hossain, Muntaz, Mahbabur Rahman Liton, Rakib Hossain, Monowar
Hossain Ujjwal, Asadur Rahman, Anisur Rahman, Alamgir Hossain and Nasir
Uddin.

Advocate Abdul Latif said the bombings and the distribution of banned
leaflets took place simultaneously at five places– Shaheed Razzak Park,
District Judge’s Court premises, Women and Children Repression Tribunal
premises, bus terminal and Khulna crossing area in the city– on August 17,
2005.

On the day of the incident, Nasiruddin Dafadar, son of Daliluddin Dafadar
of Bankal in the suburbs, was caught at the Satkhira Women and Children
Repression Tribunal, according to eyewitness Raushan of Bakal Islampur Char.

According to his confession, the JMB base was identified at Rasulpur in
Satkhira and a total of 13 people were arrested on the basis and sent them to
JIC (Joint Interrogation Cell) in Dhaka for interrogation.

Apart from giving confessional statements there, they also revealed many
secret information of the banned militant outfit JMB.

Later, they were brought back to Satkhira. On March 13, 2006, the Criminal
Investigation Department (CID) issued charge-sheet against 19 accused in six
cases.

On February 14, 2007, the Additional District and Sessions Judge of
Satkhira started the trial of the cases in the first Court. The trial of the
case, filed by Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station, started in 2008.
