Farmers expect bumper mustard yield in south-western districts

JASHORE, Feb 8, 2021 (BSS) – Farmers and agriculturists are expecting a bumper mustard production in the six south-western districts of Khulna division during the current season.

The six districts are- Jashore, Jhenaidah, Magura, Kushtia, Chuadanga, and Meherpur.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) officials said mustard cultivation is increasing every year as the farmers are showing interest in expanding its farming after getting repeated bumper production with excellent market price in the recent years.

DAE Jashore regional office sources said a total of 52,383 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation in the districts this year.

Additional Director (Acting) of Jashore regional DAE Badal Chandra Biswas said bumper mustard production is expected due to favourable weather condition along with adequate supplying of necessary seed, fertilisers and pesticides.

District wise mustard cultivation stood at 15,465 hectares of land in Jashore, 9,916 hectares in Jhenaidah, 13,495 hectares in Magura , 7,350 hectares in Kushtia, 2,257 hectares in Chuadanda and 3,900 hectares in Meherpur.

Farmers cultivated different high yielding varieties of mustard on their land including BARI-9,11,14,15,17 BINA-4,7,9,10 and TARI variety-7, said sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Shariful Islam.

Mustard farming has become more profitable than many other crops encouraging the farmers in cultivating in more lands, he added.
