National Library Day tomorrow

DHAKA, Feb 4, 2021 (BSS) – National Library Day-2021 will be
observed tomorrow in the country with the theme ‘library in every
house is the pledge of the Mujib Barsho’.

Department of Public Libraries (DPL) under Cultural Affairs Ministry
will observe the day through different programmes with a view to
building a well-educated and enlightened nation and making the people
particularly the new generation more library-oriented.

All library professionals in Bangladesh have been celebrating the
day since 2019.

On the eve of the day, President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister
Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages greeting all concerned.

In his message, President Abdul Hamid said library is the centre of
practicing knowledge which guides human being to the path to
enlightenment freeing from illiteracy and darkness.

Library has been playing an important role in building a modern,
progressive and knowledge-based society by broadening conscience,
wisdom, knowledge and intellects of human beings in the long journey
of human civilization, he said.

The president said services of library, one of the social
institutions for acquiring knowledge, have been accelerated remarkably
berceuse of flourishing of information technology across the world.

He said today public library is truly recognized as people’s
university as it brings scopes for getting huge number of facilities
including reader-service, information service and conducting research
activities.

Due to multi-faceted expansion information technology, the excessive
use of electronic tools is disrupting people’s thoughts and
innovativeness and confining mindset into technology.

The President said the entire nation including children and
juveniles should be encouraged to become library-oriented to free them
from technology-oriented life for proper expansion of their thoughts,
wisdom, conscience and values.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said library is as
like as lighthouse for a nation to be freed from illiteracy and
ignorance.

Library plays a significant role to build a well-educated and modern
nation having advanced thoughts, conscience and values, she said.

The premier said the Awami League government has taken multifaceted
plans and programmes to encourage the nation in non-communal and
progressive thoughts and conscience and in acquiring knowledge,
conducting research and practicing native cultures for the expansion
of true spirit, ideologies and values of Liberation War.

“We have taken many development programmes putting emphasis on the
overall development of library and enriching its facilities a center
of practicing knowledge,” she said.

The prime minister said a project has been taken to set up
‘Bangabandhu and Liberation War Corner’ at all government-run public
libraries to uphold the true history of Liberation War before the new
generation.

Directives have been given to introduce library hour at school level
to encourage the new generation in using libraries, she said.

The president and the prime minister wished success of all
programmes of the day.
