‘Roles of police, media vital in combating crimes’

RANGPUR, Feb 1, 2021 (BSS) – Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP) Commissioner Abdul Alim Mahmud here today said police and mass media could play the most crucial roles in controlling and curbing crimes.

“Investigative reports are more important in unearthing the motive and cause of crimes as type and cause of crimes are different and vary from country to country,” he said, adding that resolving reasons behind crimes is more vital for fruitful investigation.

Alim said this while addressing a views-exchange meeting on ‘Role of Police and Media in Controlling Crimes’ arranged at Rangpur Press Club auditorium in the city as the chief guest.

Alim said, crimes are being committed due to various reasons including poverty, lack of education and surroundings in our society.

He said cyber-crime, drugs, terrorism, murder, extortion, harassment, rape, kidnapping are all crimes. However, cyber crime is happening every day now.

“The government is enforcing the relevant laws to control all sorts of crimes. Various activities, including raising awareness through social media, are being conducted in containing cyber crimes,’ he said.

The RpMP Chief said the nature of job and profession of police and journalists are mostly similar and both are working for ensuring welfare of people.

He put emphasis on further improving relations, mutual trust, time-befitting professional cooperation and understanding among police and journalists and exchanging information to ensure social security and peace for greater national interests.

Terming the media as the third eye of the society, Abdul Alim sought constructive criticisms with suggestions from the journalists to provide better services by both the professional groups to the nation.

Among others, RpMP’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (City Special Branch) Abu Bakar Siddique, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Abu Maruf Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Minhajul Alam, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime- promoted to Superintendent of Police) Shahidullah Kawsar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detective Branch and Media) Uttam Prasad Pathak and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ujjal Kumar Roy, were present.

Presided over by Rangpur Press Club President Rashid Babu, its General Secretary Rafiqul Islam Sarkar Rafique moderated the event also participated by local journalists from the print, electronic and online media.
