Voting underway in 63 municipalities

DHAKA, Jan 30, 2021 (BSS) – The voting in the third phase elections to 63 municipalities across Bangladesh is underway.

People started casting their votes from 8am today (Saturday) and it will continue till 4pm.

In the third round of elections, voters are stamping ballot papers to choose their representatives through electronic voting machines (EVMs) were used in the first and second phases of municipality polls. Tight security measures have been taken to ensure free, fair and peaceful balloting, according to the Election Commission.

A total of 3,344 candidates — 229 candidates for mayoral posts, 755 for reserved councillor posts and 2,360 candidates for general councillor posts — are vying in the polls.

In the third phase, 37 candidates have already been elected unopposed. The mayoral candidates of Laksham in Comilla, Morrelganj in Bagerhat, and Tungipara in Gopalganj have been elected uncontested.

Besides, nine councillors for reserved seats and 25 general councillors have also been elected uncontested.
