Maya for making Haor areas flood-resistant

DHAKA, July 12, 2018 (BSS) – Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Bir Bikram, today called upon all concerned to work unitedly to make the haor region flood resistant.

He was addressing a workshop on “challenges of heavy rain in hoar region and flash flood” at Disaster Management Department conference room here.

National Professor Dr Jamilur Reza Choudhury and Professor Emeritus of BRAC University Dr Ainun Nishat also addressed the function with Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Md Shah Kamal in the chair.

Maya said lack of institutional coordination, constraints in water drainage system and lack of timely construction of embankments are increasing disaster risks manifold.

He underscored the need for taking up united efforts to minimize the disaster risks.

The minister said a committee has been formed to indentify causes of flash floods in haor region and the remedial measures to minimize the risks.

Maya said haor region is lagging behind in development compared to other regions.

He urged the scientists, researchers and planners to work unitedly for protecting the huge population from floods and other natural disasters.
