CCC vote ends peacefully, counting begins

CHATTOGRAM, Jan, 27, 2021 (BSS)- Voting for the sixth Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) elections ended peacefully today with a few sporadic incidents.

CCC polls control room sources said they did not receive any major incident excepting a few sporadic incidents.

Returning Officer Hasanuzzaman said the overall polls were held in fair and peaceful manner excepting some stray incidents outside voting centres.

Talking to journalists at election control room, set up at MA Aziz Stadium Gymnasium, Hasanuzzaman said,“The voters cast their votes amid enthusiasm and festivity.”

“The presence of the voters was quite satisfactory in the first ever EVM votes. We took necessary steps wherever any anomaly was found”, he added.

Referring to BNP-backed mayoral candidate Dr Shahdat Hossain’s allegation Hasannuzaman said that the election commission will take necessary steps wherever any anomaly was found regarding the election.

Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Saleh Mohammad Tanvir told BSS that the overall situation during the voting time was good in spite of some stray incidents.

He said the voters reached the polling centres and returned homes safely after exercising their voting rights.

The voters started casting their votes to elect one mayor, 41 councillors and 14 female councillors for reserved seats at 8 am while the voting continued till 4 pm without intermission.

A total of seven mayoral candidates, 229 councillors are contesting in the polls in 41 wards of CCC.

The last CCC polls was held on April 28, 2015.

Among the candidates, Awami League-backed Reazaul Karim Chowdhury and his family members cast their votes at BahaddarhatEklasur Rahman Chowdhury Primary School centre at 8:35 am While BNP backed mayoral candidate Dr Shahdat Hossain cast his vote at BED College centre in the city at 10 am.
