Shakib injury scare for Bangladesh ahead of Test series

CHATTOGRAM, Jan 25, 2021 (BSS) – Bangladesh received a setback after the star all-rounder suffered a groin injury during the side’s third and final ODI against West Indies at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium here today.

Shakib made 51 runs, his first half century since returning to cricket following a suspension imposed by the International Cricket Council for his failure to report corrupt approaches and delivered 4.5 overs for no wicket before walking off the ground.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will keep Shakib Al Hasan in observation, said the board’s medical department.

“He will be under observation. He doesn’t take the field after sustaining the injury,” BCB physician Dr. Manzoor Hossain Chowdhury said.

“We’ll continuously assess his condition and hopefully there will be no problem.”

Shakib suffered the injury when he fielded for his own bowling during the fifth ball of the 30th over of the game. He collapsed almost immediately in the follow through after delivering that ball and grimaced in a lot of pain.

He needed medical attention immediately but after a lot of discomfort he walked off and didn’t return to the game. Soumya Sarkar bowled the remaining delivery.

Bangladesh will play a two-match Test series against West Indies, starting with the first Test on February 3-7.

Whether Shakib could play the Test series, will entirely depend on his injury condition.
