Dhaka to be built habitable and eye-catching place : Tajul

DHAKA, Jan 23, 2021-(BSS) – Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Md Tajul Islam today said if canals of the capital are reconstructed in the style of Hatirjheel by making them clean and free from encroachment Dhaka will not only be a habitable one but also an eye catching amusing centre.

“The two mayors of Dhaka had launched an eviction drive after WASA handed over responsibility for drainage management and canals to two city corporations and activities were on. By evicting illegal establishment and structures on both sides of the canals and rivers, Dhaka will be developed as not only liveable one but also a modern, scenic and recreational centre”, he said.

He was speaking as the chief guest at a signing ceremony of an agreement titled ‘Master Plan of Meghna River’ to be prepared by the Bangladesh government with the help of Dhaka WASA aimed at formulating a master plan to keep the waters of the Meghna River free from pollution at a hotel” . said a press release.

The master plan to be designed with basic objective to protect the Meghna river from illegal occupation, pollution and navigability crisis, the implementation cost is estimated at TK 11.04 crore and the project is scheduled to be completed by 18 months.

The minister said the master plan has been taken under the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to free the rivers in and around Dhaka from encroachment, prevent pollution and increase navigability for the rivers Padma, Buriganga, Dhaleshwari, Balu and Karnaphuli in Chattogram and accordingly works are progressing fast.

Tajul said, the government has taken initiatives to build a number of new cities in the outskirts of Dhaka including Turag river.

He mentioned said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman undertook many national programs including river protection after independence.

The function was presided over by Senior Secretary, Local Government Department Helaluddin Ahmed while Managing Director and CEO Engineer Taksim A Khan, officials from Local Government Department, WASA and Institute of Water Modelling (IWM) representatives were present.
