MPs laud govt for economic growth during pandemic

SANGSAD BHABAN, Jan 21, 2021 (BSS) – The opposition lawmakers in parliament today said Bangladesh is now in the fourth position in economic growth among the Asian countries amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Economies of most of the countries, including Europe and the USA, have critically been affected due to the pandemic, but our position is still better in context of world economy,” said Jatiya Party lawmaker Dr Rustam Ali Farazi while taking part in the general discussion on a thanksgiving motion on the President’s speech in the House.

Hailing the initiatives taken by the Prime Minister during the pandemic, Farazi said the 31-points directives along with the stimulus packages have been accepted well by the people and paved the way to keep the economy dynamic.

“When the economic activities throughout the world became squeezed during the COVID-19, the Prime Minister didn’t impose restriction on the movement of people which helped us to revive the economy,” he added.

Due to time-befitting and far-sighted leadership of the Prime Minister, Bangladesh has been able to draw the global attention in facing the coronavirus pandemic, said another opposition lawmaker Abdul Mannan of Lakhipur-4.

“Even the country’s foreign remittance and reserve have significantly increased during the pandemic period,” the opposition lawmaker pointed out.

Taking part in the discussion, treasury bench lawmaker Sri Biren Sikder said Bangladesh is the only country in the subcontinent which has been able to keep its growth above 5 per cent during the pandemic.

The lawmaker thanked President Abdul Hamid for elaborating the development and progress of the country which have been taken place during the tenure of the present government.

He said BNP-Jamaat had led the country for two terms but they did not take even a single mega project in the people’s interest, but the government led by Awami League has taken a number of mega projects after coming to power in 2009.

Lauding the government’s initiatives, ruling party lawmaker M Ali Asgar of Chuadanga-2 said, “Though the GDP growth is now in negative position across the country, we have achieved over five per cent.”

The parliament members highly appreciated President Abdul Hamid for his unique address in the House on January 18 and opined that the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been advancing the country at a due speed to achieve the developed country status by 2041…

The lawmakers from both the treasury and opposition benches highlighted the successes of the present government in different vital sectors like education, power, agriculture, health, infrastructure development, economy and food production.

Treasury bench lawmakers Pankaj Devnath of Barishal-4, Iqbal Hossen of Gazipur-3, Begum Khadizatul Anwar, Jinnatul Bakia of women’s reserved seat-2, Begum Anzum Sultana Sima of women’s reserved seat-10 and Jatiya Party lawmaker of Bogura-3 Nurul Islam Talukder also took part in the discussion.

They thanked the President for giving a timely speech highlighting the success stories of the government and guiding the nation towards peace, progress and prosperity.

Earlier, they paid a rich tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for his contribution to establishing an independent Bangladesh.
