Bangladesh sustains higher growth amid COVID-19 pandemic: MPs

SANGSAD BHABAN, Jan 19, 2021 (BSS) – Amid the onslaught of the coronavirus pandemic, lawmakers both from treasury and opposition benches today said the country’s economic growth and per capita income still remain higher due to effective measures under taken by the government.

“Bangladesh was able to keep its growth rate over 7 per cent and per capita income has also significantly been heightened to US$2064 due to time-befitting leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina though the COVID-19 battered the global economy,” said Deputy Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Begum Habibun Nahar, while initiating the general discussion on a thanksgiving motion on the President’s speech in the House.

Chief Whip Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury moved the thanksgiving motion in the House while treasury bench lawmaker Abdus Shahid seconded it with Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Referring to development activities taken place in the environment and forest sector during the tenure of the Awami League government, the deputy minister said the present government has brought a tremendous change in the sector and it is continuously progressing.

Referring to the government’s success in the economic sector that was lauded by President M Abdul Hamid in his maiden speech at the eleventh session of the parliament last night, treasury bench lawmaker from Munshiganj-2, Sagufta Yasmin Emily said the president in his speech mentioned that after achieving an average growth of 6.6 percent in the last one decade and above 7 percent for last three consecutive years, Bangladesh’s GDP growth has increased to 8.15 percent in the 2018-19 fiscal year.

“This continuous achievement of Bangladesh’s growth has been praised worldwide,” she told the parliament.

In his speech on the first day of the eleventh session in the 11th parliament, the president has highlighted all development activities which have taken place in the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said another treasury bench lawmaker, Shahiduzzaman Sarker of Naogaon-2.

Referring to the success and achievement during the present government, he said the country witnessed a remarkable development in all sectors, including education, railways and agriculture, which has already been being followed by other nations.

Treasury bench lawmakers Ashim Kumar Ukil of Netrokona-3, Syeda Rubina Akhter of Women seat-28, Begum Shabnam Jahan of Women seat-303 and Jatiya Party lawmaker of Barishal-3 Golam Kibria Tipu also took part in the discussion.

The lawmakers also thanked the President for giving a timely speech highlighting the successful stories of the government and guiding the nation towards peace, progress and prosperity.

Earlier, they paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for his contribution to establishing an independent Bangladesh.
