One defamation case against Sayeed Khokon dismissed, another withdrawn

DHAKA, Jan 19, 2021 (BSS) – A court here today dismissed one of the defamation cases filed against former Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sayeed Khokon over his remarks on DSCC Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billah dismissed the case filed by Kazi Anisur Rahman as there was no material to accept it.

The other case was withdrawn as the plaintiff of the case Advocate Md Sarwar Alam applied for withdrawal.

Earlier on Monday, Kazi Anisur Rahman and Advocate Mohammad Sarwar Alam filed two separate cases in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury.

The court accepted the statements of the plaintiffs and fixed January 19 for the order.

According to the complaint, speaking at a human chain held at the Kadam Foara area in front of the High Court on January 9, Sayeed Khokon alleged that Taposh lost his competence to stay as mayor as he is submerged in corruption.

“Taposh transferred hundreds of crores of taka from the south city corporation to his Madhumati Bank…He has been making huge profits by investing the money in different businesses,” Khokon alleged.

“As per the section 9(2) (h) of the second paragraph of the second part of City Corporation Act-2009, Taposh is incompetent to remain mayor,” said Khokon.

The complaint stated, “The statement of the accused Saeed Khokon was published in various national newspapers of Bangladesh and through electronic media and social media…The accused Saeed Khokon has committed a punishable offense under Section 500 of the Penal Code by making defamatory remarks against Barrister Sheikh Fale Nur Taposh.”
