Humayun Azad Attack: prosecution wants maximum punishment

DHAKA, Jan 18, 2021 (BSS) – The prosecution in the case lodged over
the murder of Dhaka University (DU) Bangla Department Professor Dr
Humayun Azad today wanted maximum punishment for the accused.

State Counsel Saiful Islam wished for capital punishment while
presenting his arguments in the court of Dhaka’s 4th Additional
Metropolitan Sessions Judge Makshuda Parveen today.

As the arguments for the accused were not over, the court fixed
January 24 as the next date of hearing.

Dhaka University Professor Humayun Azad was mercilessly hacked by
militants in the University campus area as he was returning from Amar
Ekushey Book Fair on February 27, 2004.

His brother Monjur Kabir filed a case over attempt to murder with
Ramna Police Station the next day.

After the attack, Prof Azad took treatment in CMH here, and Bangkok,
Thailand. He died on August 12, 2004, as he was undergoing treatment
in Germany. The case later turned into a murder case with his death.

CID inspector and investigation officer Lutfur Rahman filed charge
sheet against five, JMB militants Mizanur Rahman alias Minhaz, Anwar
Alam alias Bhagne Shahid, Salehin alias Salauddin, Hafiz Mahmud and
Nur Mohammad alias Sabu, on April 30, 2012.

Of the five, Minhaz and Anwar are in jail and already gave
confessional statements, Salahuddin and Nur Mohammad are absconding
and Hafiz died.

A total of 41 witnesses including the investigation officer have
testified in the case.
