Accidental death compensation for workers to be increased by cent
percent: Mujibul

DHAKA, July 11, 2018 (BSS) – State Minister for Ministry of Labour and
Employment Md Mujibul Haque, MP, today said that compensation for accidental
death of workers would be increased by at least cent percent from the
existing Taka one lakh.

“Since the present amount of compensation offered in accidental death of a
worker is very much insufficient, the amount will be increased by at least
cent percent from the existing Taka one lakh,” he said while addressing the
national representative council of Bangladesh Construction Workers’ Union as
the chief guest at Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) here.

The minister also stressed the need for taking safety precautions at
construction sites, saying, “Construction workers should wear necessary
safety equipments during work as it will help reduce accidental deaths in
construction sites.”

According to the construction workers union and REHAB, about 37 lakh (3.7
million) people work in Bangladesh’s construction industry. According to the
reports in different newspapers, 134 construction workers have been killed
and 94 others became crippled in 2017.

President of union Md Rabiul Islam presided over the function. Among
others, Workers Party General Secretary Fazle Hossain Badshah, MP, Advisory
Council Members of the Awami League Mozaffar Hossain Paltu, and General
Secretary of Bangladesh Trade Union Kendra Dr Wajedul Islam Khan were present
on the occasion.
