Voting begins in Gaibandha, Sundarganj municipalities

GAIBANDHA, Jan 16, 2021 (BSS) – Voting in Gaibandha and Sundarganj municipalities has begun at 9 am amid tight security measures of the law enforcers.

The polling will continue till 4 pm without any break. A public holiday has been announced in the municipal areas to enable the voters to exercise their rights.

A total of 51387 voters, of them 24590 males and 26797 females, will cast their votes through 31 voting centres with153 booths in Gaibandha municipality of the district, sources said.

On the other hand, as many as 14071 voters, of them 6863 males and 7202 females will cast their votes through 9 centres with 44 booths in Sundarganj municipality of the district.

Deputy Commissioner and also district magistrate Abdul Matin said he visited some polling centers of Gaibandha municipality this morning and asked the voters about the atmosphere in the centres.

In reply, the voters expressed their satisfaction over the atmosphere in the centres as they had exercised their rights to franchise peacefully.

Members of RAB, BGB including other law enforcers are patrolling the roads and important places of the municipalities so that the voters can cast their votes without any difficulties, said police super Muhammad Towhidul Islam.

Mobile and summary courts in the polling centers will instantly try the violators of law during the polling. A magistrate will accompany the teams each, said additional district magistrate Sadiqul Islam.

A number of voters were seen to go to the polling stations to cast their votes with festive mood defying the inclement weather while this correspondent was visiting a number of centers of Gaibandha municipality.

A total of 8 candidates are contesting for the post of mayor, 17 for 3 reserved female councilors and 41 for 9 councilors in Gaibandha municipality and as many as 7 candidates are contesting for the post of mayor, 11 for 3 reserved councilors and 32 for councilors of Sundarganj municipality.
