Ritu Akter sets new national record in National Athletics

DHAKA, Jan 15, 2021 (BSS)- Ritu Akter of Bangladesh Army set the new
national record in the women’s high jump event on the first day of
Bangabandhu 44th National Athletics Competition that has begun from today at
Bangabandhu National Stadium.

She set the new national mark jumping 1.70m after eclipsing the previous
mark of 1.68m of Umme Hafsa Rumki of Bangladesh Jail which she created in
2019.

On the other hand, Mohammad Ismail Hossain of Bangladesh Navy becomes the
fastest man in the men’s singles 100m sprint event while Shirin Akhter of
Bangladesh Navy emerged the fastest woman in the women’s singles event.

Ismail finished the men’s singles with a time of 10.55 seconds while
Shirin took 11.80 seconds to complete the laps.

A total of seven events held when the last report came in the afternoon
with Bangladesh Army dominate the table with 10 medals including three gold,
three silver and four bronze while Bangladesh Navy placed at second position
with eight medals including three gold, four silver and one bronze.

Bangladesh Police stands at the third position with one gold medal.

Although the competition started from today, the state minister for Youth
and Sports Mohammad Zahid Ahsan Russell will formally inaugurate the
championship tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon.

Additional Secretary (Sports) of Youth and Sports Ministry’s Mohammad
Abdul Karim will present as special guest during the inauguration ceremony.

A total of 438 men and women athletes from 45 associations including 34
district and divisional sports associations, four universities, one education
board, Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Air Force, Bangladesh
Jail and Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defense Party are taking part in the
meet, which is being held marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Organised by Bangladesh Athletics
Federation (BAF), the competition will held in 36 events– 22 of men’s and 14
of women’s– with men and women athletes, split into two groups, are taking
part in the meet.

The first, second and third place finishers from the 36 events will get
Taka 3,000.00, Taka 2,000.00 and Taka 1,000.00 as prize money while the
record holders will get Taka 5,000.00 each.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor
Taposh is expected to present in the prize distribution ceremony of the
competition as the chief guest on Sunday (January 17) and distribute the
prizes.

BAF president ASM Ali Kabir will preside over the closing ceremony of the
meet.
