Chilli farming getting popularity in Sundarganj char areas

GAIBANDHA, Jan 15, 2021 (BSS) – Chilli farming is getting popularity among farmers of chars and the Teesta river basin areas of Sundarganj upazila in the district in recent years due to its desired output and fair price.

The farmers of the areas cultivated chilli on their land located on the both sides of the river on 155 hectares of land this year, upazila agriculture office sources said.

Bablu Miah, a chilli farmer of Haripur union of the upazila, said the farmers are increasing the farming of hybrid chilli day by day for getting desired output and fair prices.

Taka 8,000-10,000 was spent to cultivate chilli on one bigha of land but a farmer earns Taka 20,000-25,000 from the same land, he said

As the chilli farming has become profitable in the char areas farmers are showing their much interested to farm chilli

Upazila agriculture officer Syed Mahmud Reza Munna said, the farmers planted the seedlings of chilli on their char land taking the advice of the field level sub assistant agriculture office.

Technological supports are being provided from the upazila agriculture office to make the chilli farming a grand success in the upazila, he also said.

All the chilli farmers are nurturing the chilli plants to attain the cherished chilli production target, he added.

Deputy director of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) agriculturist Masudur Rahman said as chili is widely used in cooking all sorts of dishes as a spice the farmers are being motivated to farm the variety with low cost in larger scale in coming seasons.
