Bangladesh achieves remarkable progress in reducing gender gap: Indira

DHAKA, Jan 12, 2021 (BSS)- State Minister for Women and Children Affairs FazilatunNessa Indira today saidthe government has made rapid progress in reducing gender inequality as the government has increased budget allocation for development as well as empowerment of women.

“Bangladesh has become the 5thamong the world’s 153 successful states in ensuring gender equal society as the incumbent government has been gradually increasing budget allocations for the women folks,” she said.

She was addressing a programme of officials of Women in Development (WID) under the Strengthening Gender Responsive Budgeting project of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs at Bangladesh Shishu Academy auditorium here, said a press release.

The state minister said the government has increased budget allocation nearly 5 times during the last 10 years as the budget was
Tkone lakh 61 thousand crore in fiscal 2019-20 while Tk 27 thousand 248 crore in 2009-10 fiscal.

Through proper implementation of the gender budget, the government has made impressive progress in women empowerment in politics, gender equality in primary and secondary levels, reduction in child and maternal death and healthcare and vaccination across the country.

The state minister said,“Women development and empowerment are visible through socio-economic development. So, it is necessary to create employment for women and build them as entrepreneurs. Thus, the government’s patronization and budget allocation is essential.”

The government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been implementing gender-sensitive budget realizing the fact, she added.
