Govt commits to revive lost glory of Muslin: Dastagir

RAJSHAHI, Jan 12, 2021 (BSS) – Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi Bir Protik has said the present government under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is committed to revive the lost glory of Muslin.

“We have already taken measures of producing Muslin on a commercial basis so that all the stakeholders including entrepreneurs of the country can be fully informed about the production strategy of the fabric, raw materials including cotton,” he added.

The minister revealed this while addressing a meeting related to the progress review of research of the Muslin Technology Reviving Project at the Department of Botany in Rajshahi University (RU) on Monday as the chief guest.

Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Fazley Hossain Badsha, MP, Advocate Adiba Anjum Mita, MP, Secretary to the Ministry of Textile and Jute Lokman Hossain Mian and Chairman of Bangladesh Handloom Board Shah Alam also spoke.

RU Vice-chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan presided over the meeting.

Prof Monzur Hossain of the department of botany gave an illustration of reviving potentiality of Muslin along with its farming strategy and its present market value in both home and abroad during his multimedia presentation.

Minister Dastagir Gazi told the audience that the government has already obtained a certificate from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to claim Muslin as its own product in the Geographical Indicator (GI).

Muslin recently drew the attention of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who showed special interests on the fabric. In her instructions the textile and jute ministry has taken a project titled “Muslin yarn technology and Muslin cloth recovery” in a bid to resume Muslin use.

Under the project, the production of muslin cloth is progressing rapidly.

Prof Monzur Hossain said Muslin has been recognized as a cotton fabric of legendary lightness, characterized by distinctive designs. It was handwoven by certain groups of people who had expertise in delicate craftsmanship.

“We have developed a research field for ‘Phuti karpas’ cultivation in the Rajshahi University campus to get cotton fabric of legendary lightness. Cotton plants have been planted to manufacture the spinning yarn suitable for muslin cloth.

Earlier, the minister also visited and went round the Phuti Karpas experimental plant and muslin technology reviving research activities.
