Timeframe for duty-free import of Corona materials extended

DHAKA, Jan 11, 2021 (BSS) – The timeframe for providing duty-free
facility on import of COVID-19 protective materials including masks,
kits and other personal protective equipment (PPE) has been extended
for another six months.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued a notification in this
regard yesterday.

According to the fresh deadline, these products can be brought into
the country without duty till June 30 this year. The gazette
notification said the timeframe was extended to tackle the second wave
of COVID-19.

With the latest extension, the government extended the timeframe for
the 3rd straight time. The last date for import of duty free COVID-19
protective equipments was December 31, 2020. To get this duty free
facility, the importers must have to be a medical equipment
manufacturer, garment manufacturer and a government registered (IRC)
pharmaceutical company.

The government earlier waived all kinds of duties including import
duty, Value Added Tax (VAT) and Advance Income Tax on the health
protective equipments in April last year when the pandemic started to
spread in the country.

The first phase of the duty-free facility expired on September 30
last year. After that the timeframe has so far been extended thrice
following request from the Ministry of Health.
