Mayor Cup T20 cricket tournament kicks off in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Jan 10, 2021 (BSS) – The first ever Mayor Cup T-20 Cricket Tournament- 2021 kicked off at Rangpur Cricket Garden today marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Under management of Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC), the tournament is being arranged with the overall cooperation of Rangpur District Sports’ Association.

Divisional Commissioner Md. Abdul Wahhab Bhuiyan inaugurated the magnificent cricket tournament by releasing balloons at a function arranged on the ground as the chief guest.

Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa presided over the inaugural function.

Deputy Inspector General for Rangpur Range Police Devdas Bhattacharya, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Alim Mahmud, Deputy Commissioner Asib Ahsan, District Awami League President Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, Bangladesh Cricket Board Director and General Secretary of Rangpur District and Divisional Sports Associations Advocate Anwarul Islam, Jatiya Party Joint General Secretary Alhaj Abdur Razzaque, Vice-chairman of Jatiya party and its General Secretary of Rangpur city unit SM Yasser attended the function.

Mahmudur Rahman Titu, convener of the tournament committee spoke on the occasion.

Talking to BSS, Titu said eight teams from the RpCC area including one from Rangpur district administration are taking part in the tournament.

He said that the one-time star players of the national cricket team are being represented in eight teams.

The eight teams are: Haribhanga Carters, Teesta Thunders, Ghaghot Gladiators, Shyamasundari The Beauty, Tajhat Warriors, KD Canal Fighters, Begum Rokeya Pioneer and Chikley Challengers.

The icons players are: national under-19 World Cup winning cricketer Akbar Ali in Haribhanga, Sajedul in Teesta, Alauddin Babu in Ghaghot, Ariful Haque in Shyamasundari, Rubeno in Tajhat, Suhrawardy Shuvo in KD Canal, Pappu in Begum Rokeya and Nasir Hossain in Chikley.

“Four teams will compete against each other in two matches daily. The final match of the tournament will be held on January 16 next,” Titu added.

Begum Rokeya Pioneer eleven and Ghaghot Gladiators eleven took part in the opening match today.
