Nayeem in race to be fit ahead of Windies Test series

DHAKA, Jan 9, 2021 (BSS)—Young off-spinner Nayeem Hasan was in race to be fit ahead of the two-match Test series against West Indies after injuring his right-hand finger during the Bangabandhu T20 Cup last month.

He needed an operation to fix the things and he would again undergo an operation tomorrow (Sunday) after which he will start his initiative to make his way into the side. In the first surgery, the doctors put two pins on the finger. Those pins will be removed through a second surgery tomorrow.

Nayeem got injured while fielding as a substitute fielder against Gemcon Khulna for Beximco Dhaka. He was subsequently ruled out of the tournament but to ensure his place in the West Indies series, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) made arrangements for his surgery on the injured finger after the end of the tournament.

About three weeks later, his second surgery is set to take place at the Evercare Hospital in the capital.

“Nayeem will undergo an operation, through which the pins on his finger will be taken out tomorrow,” said BCB chief physician Dr. Debashis Chowdhury.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh national team officially begins their practice session for the West Indies series tomorrow (Sunday).

Whether Nayeem would be fit for Test series, which starts on February 3 is still undecided.

“The decision will be made by the team management since he is a member of the Test squad,” Dr. Chowdhury said.

Nayeem said it will take one week for him to start practicing bowling after the second operation.

“I will start bowling when the pain subsides. It might take one week,” Nayeem said.
