Enhanced lamb rearing venture can cut rural poverty

RAJSHAHI, Jan 7, 2021 (BSS) – Veterinary scientists and academics unanimously viewed substantial and sustainable promotion of lamb rearing can be the vital means of reducing rural poverty side by side with meeting up the existing protein demands.

Importance should be given on expanding modern farming techniques and ideas among the villagers so that they can elevate their income through availing the lamb farming scopes properly. All the authorities concerned should come forward and work together to this end.

They came up with the observation while addressing a seminar on the attained successes of the ‘Validation of Good Practices of On-farm Lamb Production System’ project on Narkelbaria campus of Rajshahi University (RU) on Wednesday.

The Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in RU hosted the seminar under the project which is being implemented with financial support of Krishi Gobeshona Foundation (KGF).

On the occasion, 10 lambs were distributed to a new entrepreneur on behalf of the project aimed at further extension of farming to the region’s rural areas.

KGF Executive Director Dr Jibon Krishna Biswash addressed the seminar as chief guest, while Co-investigators of the project Dr Hemayetul Islam and Dr Akhtarul Islam disseminated their expertise on the issue.

Principal Investigator of the project Prof Jalal Uddin Sarder gave an illustration of the project besides its aims, objectives, implementation strategy and, so far, achievements during his multimedia presentation.

In his remarks, Dr Jibon Krishna said quick economic growth of the region can be possible through proper uses and development of livestock resources.

Both commercial and non-commercial sheep farming should be given priority for poverty reduction and creating self-employment, he said.

He urged the rural people to start lamb farming commercially using modern methods and technology to meet nutritional demand and produce valuable wool to help develop woolen textile in the country.

Prof Jalal Uddin Sarder told the meeting that 59 farmers were given 600 lambs besides imparting them with need-based training on how to rear those in three categories in Paba and Godagari Upazilas in Rajshahi district on behalf of the project.

He said a model sheep slaughterhouse and a lamb meat sale centre has been functioning for the last couple of months for the first time in the city.

The project intends to boost the supply of high nutritious lamb meat with improving the living and livelihood condition of the marginal farmers through rearing lambs.
