Drive against illegal fishing nets begin Jan 10

KHULNA, Jan 06, 2021 (BSS) – The government will enforce a combined special drive by local administrations and law enforcers in 13 southern districts from January 10, to stop the catching of fish with illegal nets.

Aiming to protect the fries and fauna and to enhance the overall fish production, the first phase operation will continue from January 10 to January 16. While the second phase operation will start from January 25 and continue till February 1.

In this regard, Khulna Fisheries office organized a preparedness meeting today at the deputy commissioner’s conference room with additional deputy commissioner Md Yousup Ali in the chair.

District Fisheries officer Md Abu Sayeed delivered the inaugural speech seeking cooperation from media as well as law enforcement agencies to make the special combing operation a success.

The districts where the operation will be conducted are – Patuakhali, Barguna, Bhola, Barishal, Noakhali, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira, Cox’s Bazar, Chattagram, Munsiganj, Pirojpur and Chandpur.

Talking to BSS, Khulna district fisheries officer Md Abu Sayeed told BSS that the fisheries and livestock ministry took the decision on “Conducting a Special Combing Operation” to remove all illegal fishing nets, at a meeting in its conference room on December 23, 2020.

The monitoring team of the ministry and the department of fisheries will coordinate the special operation, the official said.

The drive will be conducted by the teams consisting of: Navy, Police, RAB, Coast Guard, Naval Police, local administration, public representatives, and the Department of Fisheries.
