India’s caseload of UK variant mutant strain of coronavirus reaches 58

NEW DELHI, Jan 5, 2021 (BSS) – India’s total cases of new UK variant of Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus reached at 58 with the 20 more cases recorded today following genome sequencing of positive samples released by the Indian Sars-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (Insacog) labs.

All the 20 people were disembarked at different Indian airports from the UK, the country where the new variant of mutant strain was identified in September last.

Among them, 10 samples tested positive in Bengaluru, three in Hyderabad, five in Pune, 11 in Delhi, eight in NCDC, New Delhi and one in Kolkata.

“All these persons have been kept in single-room isolation in designated health care facilities by respective state governments. Their close contacts have also been put under quarantine,” Indian health ministry statement said.

Nearly 33,000 passengers disembarked at various Indian airports from UK from November 25 to December 23, 2020.

All these passengers are being tracked following directives given by the central government to the states and union territories recently.

However, India’s total coronavirus caseload reached 1,03,56,844 with 16,375 new single day cases, the lowest in over six months. The death toll increased to1,49,850 with 201 new fatalities during the last 24 hours, according to the data updated at 8 am by the union health ministry.
