Livestock vaccine production must increase: Rezaul

DHAKA, Dec 4, 2020 (BSS) – Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM
Rezaul Karim today said vaccine import in the livestock sector must
reduce by increasing vaccine production at local level.

“Bringing vaccines from abroad cost a huge amount of money. If we
can produce those locally, the cost of vaccines will be one-third,
which will help us save money,” he told the concluding session of a
scientific conference here.

The meeting was organised at the conference room of the Livestock
Research Institute under the Department of Livestock at Mohakhali,
marking the Mujib Year.

Rezaul said: “If we can save more money, we will be able to
contribute to the country’s development more.”

“If the country’s talented scientists can produce vaccines, why do
we bring those from abroad?” he questioned.

Noting that failure to provide researched resources will destroy the
country’s livestock sector, the livestock minister said that is why
the livestock sector needs to be developed and enriched applying the
innovative knowledge of the scientists.

“We must create a situation where we can stand keeping our heads up
before the world,” he added.

Chaired by director general of the Department of Livestock Dr Abdul
Jabbar Sikder, the concluding session of the conference was addressed,
among others, by Fisheries and Livestock secretary Raunak Mahmud and
director of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute Dr Md Farhad
Hossain.

Additional secretary of the ministry Shah Md Emdadul Haque, director
general of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute Dr Nathu Ram Sarkar
and senior officials, researchers and scientists of the department and
the livestock institute were present.

A total of 21 research papers were presented at the daylong
conference arranged for the first time.
