Record number of ships arrives at Mongla port in Dec

BAGERHAT, Jan 4, 2021 (BSS)- Mongla Port, the second largest sea harbor of
the country, witnessed anchoring of at least 117 foreign ships in last
December breaking all previous records, said Mongla Port Authority.

In the last 70 years, never before so many foreign ships have arrived here
like this month after establishing the port, said Sheikh Fakir Uddin,
commander of the Port Authority.

Therefore, one after another new projects are being implemented to increase
the capacity of the Mongla port.

“The modern facilities like capital dredging in the Outer Ban including the
Mongla Port Animal Channel have become more popular among the foreigners and
the number of ships arrival has been increasing,” he said, adding that the
port has also set a new record in revenue collection.

In 2014-15 fiscal year (FY), the number of ships arrived at the Mongla port
was 416, 482 arrived in 2015-16 FY, 624 in 2016-17 FY, 784 in 2017-19 FY and
912 ships arrived in 2018-19 FY.

The number of foreign ships arrival at the port is increasing by 120 to
150 every year, the sources added.
