Additional 1,000 MT rice kept ready for flood victims: Maya

DHAKA, July 10, 2018 (BSS) – Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya today said the Disaster Management Department has kept 1,000 tonnes of rice and Taka 2 crore to help the flood victims.

“Besides, every district has kept 150-200 tonnes of rice and Taka 3-5 lakh to help people during and after the flood,” he told newsmen after a review meeting on flood at the secretariat here.

Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Md Shah Kamal, Social Welfare Secretary Md. Zillar Rahman, Water Resources Ministry’s acting Secretary Kabir Bin Anwar, Technical and Madrasah Education Division Secretary Md Alamgir, Disaster Management Department Director General Md Reaz Ahmed were present among others.

Maya said 75,000 packets of light foods have been sent to 35 flood-prone districts.

He said recent heavy rains had caused flooding in nine districts. Moulvibazar and Nilphamari districts were affected much while seven other flood affected districts were Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogura, Sirajganj, Jamalpur, Sylhet and Sunamganj.

The minister said Taka 1.12 crore and 5,500 tonnes of rice of gratuitous relief (GR) have been distributed in 64 districts since July 1 last. Besides, 50,000 bundles of corrugated tin and Taka 15 crore have been sent to deputy commissioners to repair the damaged houses in the flood-hit areas, he added.

About shifting of Rohingya families due to flooding or heavy rains, Maya said around 30 to 35 thousand Rohingya families have been shifted to safe location and others who are at risky situation will be shifted within the shortest possible time.
