Four bodies recovered from Shitalakkhya River

NARAYANGANJ, July 10, 2018 (BSS) – The bodies of four people were
recovered early this morning from Koila ghat point of the river Shitalakkha,
two days after they went missing.

Narayanganj fire service and civil defense rescue team, BIWTA and river
police in a joint search operation recovered the bodies of the missing
passengers at around 6:30 am on Tuesday.

River police and relatives identified the bodies as – Din Islam, 35, son
of late Kalachan Mia, Md. Joni, 22, son of Md. Fakir Chand, Rahat Ahmed Emon,
22, son of Ramiz Uddin, and Anwar Hossain Palan, 45, son of Ziabul Haque. All
of them were garment workers and hailed from Madanganj area.

All the bodies were handed over to the family members by Narayanganj sadar
thana police in the morning without autopsy.

Family sources said the victims were going to Madanganj from Narayanganj
central BIWTA ferry ghat by an overloaded engine boat, which was carrying
around 30 to 40 passengers on board.

Suddenly the makeshift shade of the Engine Boat collapsed and panic
stricken passengers jumped into the river out of fear. Many of them managed
to swim ashore. But the four victims remained missing since Sunday night.

A total of 17 divers and rescue team of fire service recovered the bodies
after 35 hours.

Sources said, the bodies were swept away from Narayanganj central BIWTA
ferry ghat to koila ghat by the surge of the current of the river
Shitalakkha, a distance of about three kilometers.
