Shahab seeks media supports to protect the environment

DHAKA, Jan 2, 2021 (BSS) – Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Mohammad Shahab Uddin today said present government has constantly striving to control environmental pollution, conserve biodiversity, plant trees and address the impacts of climate change.

“To control air pollution, the government has intensified steps against illegal brick kilns, vehicles and factories and the active participation of the people is a must with all initiatives of the government to reach the control of environmental pollution into desired level,” he said.

“I seek media support to help create public awareness on overall environmental pollution control, including the use of harmful materials, polythene and plastics. Environmental protection can only be ensured with the joint efforts of all’, he further said.

The minister said this while speaking as the chief guest at a function at the National Press Club to mark 10th founding anniversary of the online newspaper ‘The News’.

He said, the media has played a strong role in different critical juncture of the nation especially restoration of democracy.

‘The responsible role of the country’s media in stamping out corruption and irregularities is also commendable’ Shahab Uddin said.

“The present democratic government believes in free flow of information and freedom of expression of the people. To this end, the government has continued to bring under registration of the print and electronic media as well as online media in phases’ Shahab Uddin said adding that the welfare of the mass people is only possible if this popular online media publishes accurate and objective news” he added.

He urged the authorities of this media outlets to refrain from publishing baseless, and misleading reports, said a press release.

The Environment Minister said the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the competent daughter of the father of the nation, is taking the country forward with indomitable speed with coverage of most people by social safety network programmes, including housing for the homeless people.

Presided over by Editor and publisher of the online Newspaper “The News “Promithius Chowdhury, the function was addressed among others by Bangla Academy Director Aparesh Kumar Banerjee, Indian Correspondents Association President Basudeb Dhar, Awami Juba League Executive Member Manik Lal Ghosh, Former Chairman of Madaripur Upazila and valiant freedom fighter Dhirendranath Baruri and Barrister Soumitra Sardar among others.
