SC stays acquittal order for 3 convicts in Hridoy murder case

DHAKA, Dec 23, 2020 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today stayed a High Court order that acquitted three persons convicted and sentenced to death by a lower court in a case lodged over murder of Cox’s Bazar child Hridoy.

Justice Hasan Foez Siddique of the Appellate Division Chamber Judge Court passed the order after holding a hearing on a state plea to stay the High Court judgement.

“In our submission, we have said the three have confessed their crimes before the court and the witnesses also have accused those three for the crime. The apex court has stayed the High Court order for eight weeks because of today’s order, the three convicts will not be able to come out from their condemned cell,” Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Boshir Ullah said.

The state counsel hoped that the regular bench of the Appellate Division will uphold three convicts Abdul Khalek, Bahadur Miah, and Abdus Shukkur’s death sentence in the case.

Cox’s Bazar town’s Nuniyarchara area’s Nurul Alam’s son and Haji Hasan Government Primary School student Hridoy, 6, was abducted on July 4, 2013, and the abductors had demanded Taka three lakh as ransom. Hridoy’sbody was recovered from the beach area the next day.

Hridoy’s father Nurul Alam filed the case on July 6, 2013, and police on April 20, 2014, filed a charge-sheet against Abdul Khalek, Bahadur Miah, Abdus Shukkur and Jashim.

Cox’s Bazar Sessions Judge Court on June 7, 2015, in its judgement acquitted Jashim and sentenced the other three to death for the murder. After holding hearing on the death reference and jail appeals, the High Court on December 7, 2020, acquitted the three convicts.
