23,888 tonnes onion yield likely in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, Dec 23, 2020 (BSS) – Farmers have brought extensive land under onion cultivation with a production target of 23888 tonnes in the district this season.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office sources said onion was cultivated on 171 hectares more land this year, raising its total cultivable land to 2625 hectares.

DAE deputy director Md Aminul Islam said fair price of onion, motivational programme and incentive are behind the increased cultivation of onion this year.

He said aiming to increase onion production, the government disbursed incentives among small and marginal farmers.

A total of 1000 farmers got seeds and fertilizers under the incentive programme for onion cultivation, he added.

Sources said 1290 hectares of land was brought under onion cultivation with a production target of 11739 tonnes in Islampur upazila, 700 hectares with a production target of 6370 tonnes in Jamalpur sadar, 240 hectares with a production target of 2184 tonnes in Dewanganj, 110 hectares with a production target of 1001 tonnes in Bakshiganj, 95 hectares with a production target of 865 tonnes in Melandah, 120 hectares with a production target of 1092 tonnes in Sarishabari and 70 hectares with a production target of 637 tonnes in Madarganj.
