Slum dwellers in C’nawabganj municipality getting facilities

CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Dec 22, 2020 (BSS) – Dwellers in six slums of Chapainawabganj municipality are getting facilities as the incumbent government has implemented several projects with a view to improving their standard of life.

The municipality has ensured a lot of facilities including concrete roads, pure drinking water, street lights, sanitary toilets, drains and dustbins under the Third Urban Governance Infrastructure Improvement Project (UGIIP-3) at a cost of Taka 3,47,50,861.

Executive Engineer of Chapainawabganj municipality Md. Sadequl Islam said at the continuous increase of population poor people are moving towards the towns in search of work. They take shelter in the slums and construct residences without plans and as a result, the environment of the slum areas becomes unhealthy.

The government has taken programmes for planned urbanization to improve the quality of the slums, he added.

Sadequl Islam further added that as part of the government’s theme of development Chapainawabganj municipality has been implementing the UGIIP-3 project under the management of Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) financed by the Government of Bangladesh (GOB), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID).

He again informed that a total of 2.70 kilometres footpath, one kiolmetre drain, 101 sanitary latrines with bath rooms, 15 dustbins have been constructed and 22 solar lights and 45 semi-deep tube-wells have been installed in six slums of the municipality under the project and as a result 5,000 slum dwellers are being directly benefitted.

This correspondent visited Monnapara slum in Chapainawabganj municipality and talked with the chairperson of the Slum Improvement Committee (SIC) Sagori Begum who is also a slum dweller.

She said, “The SIC comprising 15 members takes care of the slum and the infra-structures constructed under the project. Before the implementation of the project the environment of the slum was dark and unhealthy.”

“Now in our slum, we have got 15 sanitary latrines with bathrooms, seven semi-deep tube-wells, seven solar street lights, three dustbins, 425 metres concrete footpath and 160 metres drain,” Sagori added.

“We make plans through Community Action Plan (CAP) and implement the projects with the technical support of the municipality. We feel that our dream has come true and all 105 families living in our slum are happy,” she further added.
