BANGUI, Central African Republic, Dec 21, 2020 (BSS/AFP) – The situation in the Central African Republic is “under control”, the UN peacekeeping mission said Sunday, two days after rebel forces seized control of key routes into the capital Bangui a week ahead of elections.

With the government decrying a coup attempt by supporters of former president Francois Bozize, a spokesman of the UN peacekeeping force MINUSCA said armed groups have left the town of Yaloke, and peacekeepers have been sent to Mbaiki, where there was fighting on Saturday, “to block armed elements”.

The spokesman, Vladimir Monteiro, also said that rebels have lost ground at Bossembele and Bossemptele, adding: “The situation is under control.”
