100 third gender community people get blankets in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Dec 21, 2020 (BSS) – The district administration in association with the Department of Social Services (DSS) distributed blankets among 100 ‘Hijra’ (third gender) community people in the city last night.

Officials said the blankets were distributed from 51,600 pieces of blankets allocated recently by the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for distribution among cold-stricken poor and distressed people to mitigate their sufferings across the district.

Divisional Commissioner Abdul Wahhab Bhuiyan distributed the blankets in a function held at Rangpur Government Girls’ High School premises as the chief guest abiding by the health directives in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Presided over by Deputy Commissioner Md. Asib Ahsan, Deputy Director of the DSS Md. Abdul Matin attended the function as a special guest.

On the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner said 460 pieces of blankets are being distributed among cold-stricken people in each of the 76 unions of all eight upazilas of the district.

The Divisional Commissioner said the government would continue distribution of blankets among cold-hit people of all eight districts in Rangpur division throughout the winter season to stand beside them and mitigate their sufferings.

He called upon the ‘Hijra’ community members to regularly wash hands, use masks and maintain cleanliness and properly abide by the health directives for safety of their own and others and preventing community transmission of COVID-19 virus.
