Coronavirus toll at 1100 GMT Monday
PARIS, Dec 15, 2020 (BSS/AFP) – The novel coronavirus has killed at least
1,621,397 people since the outbreak emerged in China in December last year,
according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP at 1100 GMT on
Tuesday.
At least 72,761,200 cases have been registered. Of these, at least
46,866,300 are now considered recovered.
The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and
information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a
fraction of the actual number of infections.
Many countries are testing only symptomatic or the most serious cases.
On Monday, 8,272 new deaths and 537,261 new cases were recorded worldwide.
Based on latest reports, the countries with the most new deaths were the
United States with 1,386 new deaths, followed by Russia with 577 and Germany
with 500.
The United States is the worst-affected country with 300,479 deaths from
16,519,616 cases. At least 6,298,082 people have been declared recovered.
After the US, the hardest-hit countries are Brazil with 181,835 deaths from
6,927,145 cases, India with 143,709 deaths from 9,906,165 cases, Mexico with
114,298 deaths from 1,255,974 cases, and Italy with 65,011 deaths from
1,855,737 cases.
The country with the highest number of deaths compared to its population is
Belgium with 156 fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Peru with
111, Italy with 108, and both Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Republic of North
Macedonia 103.
Europe overall has 485,475 deaths from 22,428,120 cases, Latin America and
the Caribbean 472,868 deaths from 14,104,251 infections, and the United
States and Canada 313,958 deaths from 16,983,929 cases.
Asia has reported 206,332 deaths from 13,155,038 cases, the Middle East
85,171 deaths from 3,666,782 cases, Africa 56,651 deaths from 2,392,512
cases, and Oceania 942 deaths from 30,575 cases.
As a result of corrections by national authorities or late publication of
data, the figures updated over the past 24 hours may not correspond exactly
to the previous day’s tallies.
