10 sentenced to death for killing Amzad chairman in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, Dec 13, 2020 (BSS) – A court here today sentenced ten people to death and five others to life-term imprisonment for killing Awami League leader and Satkania’s Sonakania Union Parishad Chairman Amjad Hossain in 1999.

Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge AKM Mozammel Haque handed down the verdict, 21 years after the murder, a court official said.

The death convicts are – Imtiaz alias Manik, Satkania Sadar UP Chairman Nezam Uddin Chowdhury, Jahed, Abu Mohammad Rashed, Tareq, Faruk Ahmed, Bashir Ahmed, Zillur Rahman, Md Rafiq and Jasim Uddin.

The tribunal also acquitted four people as charges brought against them could not be proven.

The court also fined Taka 50 thousand each life term convict in default to suffer more one-year imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, Amjad Hossain, an Awami League leader and chairman of Sonakania Union under Satkania Upazila was shot dead by identified miscreants at a tea stall at Mirzakhil Banglabazar area under Sathania Thana on October 3 in 1999.

Syeda Rawshan Akhter, wife of Amjad Hossain, filed a case at Satkhania police Station against 20 people on October 4.

After investigating the case, CID Inspector MA Kader Khan submitted a charge sheet against 20 people before the court on December 22, in 2000.

Court framed the charges against them on October 25 in 2004.

The court announced the verdict after examining 21 prosecution witnesses out of 29.

Among them, prime accused Mohammad Lutfur Rahman Chowdhury died after framing charges.

Earlier, the court sent 10 convicts to jail after rejecting their bail petitions on November 11.

Talking to BSS Rawshan expressed her satisfaction with the verdict. I have been waiting for the verdict for the last 21 years, she said.
