COVID-19 cases cross 14,800 in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, Dec 13, 2020 (BSS) – The number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases has crossed the 14,800 mark in Rangpur division where the daily infection rate of the deadly virus is showing a fluctuating trend in recent days.

“The number of coronavirus cases rose to 14,801 in the division with 66 more infections reported on Saturday,” Focal Person of COVID-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr. ZA Siddiqui told BSS today.

The 66 new positive cases were diagnosed after testing 319 samples at the two COVID-19 Laboratories in the division as the daily infection rate is about 20.69 percent.

Earlier, the daily infection rate was 10.64 percent on Friday, 13.03 percent on Thursday, 15.42 on Wednesday, 15.69 on Tuesday, 12.23 on Monday and 16.32 on Sunday last in the division.

“The district-wise break up of the 14,801 patients stands at 3,771 in Rangpur, 749 in Panchagarh, 1,274 in Nilphamari, 941 in Lalmonirhat, 986 in Kurigram, 1,435 in Thakurgaon, 4,251 in Dinajpur and 1,394 in Gaibandha districts,” he said.

Since the beginning, a total of 90,757 collected samples were tested in the division till Saturday, and of them, 14,801 were found COVID-19 positive with an average infection rate of about 16.31 percent.

Meanwhile, the number of recovered COVID-19 patients rose to 13,409 with the recovery of 35 more infected people in the division on Saturday raising the average recovery rate to 90.59 percent.

“The average recovery rate of COVID-19 patients is currently about 5.55 times higher than the average infection rate in Rangpur division,” Dr. Siddiqui said.

The 13,409 recovered patients include 3,149 of Rangpur, 707 of Panchagarh, 1,212 of Nilphamari, 909 of Lalmonirhat, 928 of Kurigram, 1,245 of Thakurgaon, 3,955 of Dinajpur and 1,304 of Gaibandha districts.

Talking to BSS, Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Md. Ahad Ali said the number of fatalities rose to 275 in the division with three more deaths, including two from Rangpur and one from Lalmonirhat, reported on Saturday.

“The district-wise break up of the 275 fatalities stands at 64 in Rangpur, 97 in Dinajpur, 30 in Thakurgaon, 23 in Nilphamari, 15 in Kurigram, 15 in Gaibandha, 20 in Panchagarh and 11 in Lalmonirhat districts of the division,” he said.

“The average casualty rate currently stands at about 1.86 percent in the division,” he said.

“Among the total 14,801 COVID-19 infected patients, 94 are undergoing treatments at isolation units of different hospitals after recovery of 13,409 patients and 275 deaths while 1,023 remaining in home isolations across the division,” Dr. Ali said.

Chief of Divisional Coronavirus Service and Prevention Task Force and Principal of Rangpur Medical College Professor Dr. AKM Nurunnabi Lyzu today told BSS that the COVID-19 infection rate is showing a fluctuating trend in the division in recent days.

“The common people must wear masks and abide by the health directives to remain safe during the current second wave of the deadly virus spread,” he added.
