5 killed in truck-jeep collision in southern India

NEW DELHI, July 9, 2018 (BSS/XINHUA) – At least five people have been
killed and 13 others injured in a collision between a truck and a jeep in
southern Indian state of Kerala Monday, police said.

The accident occurred at Uppala in Kasaragod district, 550kms from capital
Thiruvananthapuram.

“The jeep carrying some 18 people — all members of an extended family —
collided head-on with the truck coming from the opposite direction this
morning,” a police official said.

While five people, including three women, died on the spot, those injured
have been admitted to a government hospital where the condition of two are
said to be serious, he added.

Eye-witnesses told cops that both vehicles were travelling at high speed
and the drivers failed to apply brakes when they spotted each other, leading
to the accident.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said. “A cash of
rash and negligency driving has been registered and a manhunt launched to nab
the absconding truck driver,” he added.
