Global Covid-19 deaths reach 1,570,398

PARIS, Dec 10, 2020 (AFP) – The novel coronavirus has killed at least 1,570,398 people since the outbreak emerged in China last December, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP at 1100 GMT on Thursday.

At least 68,884,640 cases of coronavirus have been registered. Of these, at least 43,860,500 are now considered recovered.

The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.

Many countries are testing only symptomatic or the most serious cases.

On Wednesday, 12,507 new deaths and 654,991 new cases were recorded worldwide.

Based on latest reports, the countries with the most new deaths were United States with 3,071 new deaths, followed by Brazil with 836 and Mexico with 781.

The United States is the worst-affected country with 289,450 deaths from 15,392,196 cases. At least 5,889,896 people have been declared recovered.

After the US, the hardest-hit countries are Brazil with 178,995 deaths from 6,728,452 cases, India with 141,772 deaths from 9,767,371 cases, Mexico with 111,655 deaths from 1,205,229 cases, and the United Kingdom with 62,566 deaths from 1,766,819 cases.

The country with the highest number of deaths compared to its population is Belgium with 152 fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Peru with 111, Italy with 102, Spain 101.

Latin America and the Caribbean overall have 464,537 deaths from 13,725,721 cases, Europe 461,674 deaths from 20,510,249 infections, and the United States and Canada 302,399 deaths from 15,825,136 cases.

Asia has reported 202,692 deaths from 12,912,790 cases, the Middle East 83,266 deaths from 3,571,087 cases, Africa 54,888 deaths from 2,309,183 cases, and Oceania 942 deaths from 30,478 cases.
