Mymensingh free day tomorrow

MYMENSINGH, Dec 9, 2020(BSS)-Mymensingh was freed on December 10 in 1971 and the people of Mymensingh will celebrate the day marking the defeat of Pakistani occupation forces.

On this day in 1971, the freedom fighters led by Principal Matiur Rahman, former Religious Minister and ex-president of the district unit of Awami League, and Indian allied forces marched towards the Mymensingh town after crossing the ferry ghat at Shambuganj of the river Brahmmaputra and freed Mymensingh through hoisting red and green flags of independent of Bangladesh at circuit house ground.

While marching the freedom fighters and allied forces towards circuit house hundreds of joyful people, relatives, friends and well-wishers welcomed the freedom fighters and allied forces.

Pakistani occupation forces fled away Dhaka through the district of Tangail on the midnight on December 9, 1971.

On April 17, 1971, a fierce battle took place between Pakistani army and the freedom fighters at Kalihati in Tangail on April 17 and it continued for five days. It was the first fierce battle in this region during the 1971 Liberation War.

The Pakistani troops managed to enter Mymensingh town on April 22 in 1971. The freedom fighters built their stronghold in bordering Haluaghat upazila of the district.

Several front wars took place in the border area during the nine-month long bloody war.

Between May and November in 1971, the freedom fighters and the Pakistani occupation forces locked in fierce fighting at different places in the district and its surrounding areas.

During the battles, both sides witnessed huge casualties.

On December 7, the freedom fighters freed Haluaghat from the occupation forces and on December 8, Phulpur and Bhaluka upazilas Tarakanda areas.

The valiant freedom fighters forced the invaders to retreat from their occupied areas in the district..

At least 125 freedom fighters, including students and cultural activists, in the district embraced martyrdom for the freedom of the motherland.

To keep the memory of the freedom fighters and martyrs alive, a Liberation War Memorial titled “Muktijuddho Smiriti Saudha” was built on the bank of the Brahmaputra River in the town in 2000.

Meanwhile, district administration, Muktijuddha Sangsad Mymensingh district unit and Mymensingh Free and Victory Day Celebration Committee have jointly taken a week long programme at Chhotabazar area in the city on virtual media, said Deputy Commissioner of Mymensingh Md Mizanur Rahman.,

To mark the day, week long programme will be inaugurated at city’s Chhoto Bazar ‘Mukto Moncha’ tomorrow (December 10) morning. Following health safety guidelines and other rules, set by the government.
