HC orders to take action against Bangabandhu’s sculpture vandals

DHAKA, Dec 09, 2020 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) has ordered authorities concerned to take legal action against the people who vandalized sculpture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and those who were inciting the crime by opposing installation of the monument.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order yesterday and issued a rule after holding hearing on a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Uttam Kumar Lahery.

Advocate Nahid Sultana Juthi moved the plea before the court, while Attorney General AM Amin Uddin took part in the hearing for the state.

Secretaries of home, religious affairs and liberation war affairs ministries, Inspector General of Police, and Director General of Islamic Foundation have been made respondents in the rule.

“The court has ordered the respondents including the Home Secretary to take action against the people who vandalized sculpture of the Father of the Nation and groups with vested interests as per Article 7 (A) of the constitution and in line with the existing laws,” Advocate Nahid Sultana Juthi told BSS.

The court also questioned the ‘inaction’ of the respondents in taking action against the vandals and criminals.

The court also ordered director general of Islamic Foundation and Khatib of Baitul Mukarram to disseminate their statement in mass media for making people aware about sculpture, mural and statue and getting rid of the confusion from their minds.
