HC wants action against vandals of Bangabandhu’s sculpture

DHAKA, Dec 8, 2020 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today ordered
authorities concerned to take legal action against the people
vandalized sculpture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman and those who were inciting the crime by opposing
installation of the monument.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice JBM Hassan and
Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order and issued a rule after
holding hearing on a writ filed in this regard.

The court also ordered director general of Islamic Foundation and
Khatib of Baitul Mukarram to disseminate their statement in mass media
for making people aware about sculpture, mural and statue and remove
confusion of their minds.

The High Court in its rule asked the respondents to explain as to
why it shall not pass order to take punitive action as per the
constitution and existing law against the people vandalized sculpture
of the Father of the Nation and the groups with vested interests, to
preserve and secure the dignity of Bangabandhu’s monuments.

The court also questioned inaction of the respondents in taking
action against the vandals and criminals.

Secretaries of home, religious affairs and liberation war affairs
ministries, Inspector General of Police, and Director General of
Islamic Foundation have been made respondents in the rule.

The court came up with the order after hearing a writ petition
filed by Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Uttam Kumar Lahery.

Advocate Nahid Sultana Juthi and Shah Monjurul Hoque moved the plea
before the court, while Attorney General AM Amin Uddin appeared for
the state.
