Shanto again fails to break Tamim’s fastest T20 century record

DHAKA, Dec 8, 2020 (BSS)—Nazmul Hossain Shanto threatened to break two records of Tamim Iqbal on Tuesday in Bangabandhu T20 Cup during his side Minister Group Rajshahi’s crucial match against Fortune Barishal at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium today.

But he missed those two records narrowly. He came close to breaking Tamim’s record of fastest T20 century by a Bangladesh batsman and most sixes in T20 cricket, also by a Bangladeshi batsman.

While he equaled the record of hitting most sixes, which is 11, in his 54 ball-109 runs knock, he missed the chance of breaking the fastest T20 century. Tamim and Shanto are the only two batsmen of Bangladesh to hit more than 10 sixes in a T20 match.

He indeed came close twice in a year to break Tamim’s fastest century record but failed on both occasions.

Tamim hit the fastest T20 100 by a Bangladeshi batsman when he smashed a 50 ball-century for Comilla Victorians during his 61 ball-141 not out against Dhaka Dynamites in BPL 2019. Tamim also struck 11 sixes, the most by a Bangladeshi batsman in that match. Tamim’s record ton helps Cumilla lift the BPL title.

Shanto firstly came close to breaking the record in January this year in Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BBPL) when he was playing for Khulna Tigers in a match against Dhaka Platoon. He smashed a 51 ball-century during his 57 ball-115 runs knock and thereby failed to break the record.

Again he came close to breaking the record during the match against Minister Group Rajshahi and Fortune Barishal today. In front of Tamim who leads the Barishal side, Shanto started such carnage that he came close to grabbing the record but he missed it again. However he completed the century off 52 balls, making it the third fastest century by a Bangladeshi batsman.

West Indies’s Chirs Gayle currently holds the record of fastest T20 century, which came of just 30 balls. South Africa’s David Miller and India’s Rohit Sharma however remain joint fastest T20 centurion in International T20 cricket, smashing the century of just 35 balls.
